Title:
"Bug in a Jar"
Category:
Artistic
Description:
How many entomologists have gotten their start by collecting insects
in jars while on a backyard safari? I photographed this milkweed
bug in a plastic jar to illustrate the piercing sucking mouthparts of a
true bug; but I found that the scratches and spots on the jar lent the
image a surreal, almost abstract art feel. Consequently, I’ve
always liked this image for its artistic merit as much as being a good
teaching picture. It reminds me of summertime insect collecting with
kids.
Equipment/technique:
Nikon 950 digital camera. Indoor light. Cropped and resized
in Photoshop.
