Main-Display Screen Area
Overview
The Main-Display Area of
the Scientific Name Finder (Classification Option) Screen displays an indented
classification of the higher taxa included in the TIARA system, together with associated user-selectable controls and header and footer
information. The classification, a standardized indented list in which each line
corresponds to a single taxon, provides a flexible and comprehensive means
of linking to all TIARA system Taxon Home Pages
using appropriate scientific names. Major features of the classification list display include: (1)
information on the diversity of subtaxa included in the TIARA system for
each higher taxon, (2) an indentation scheme that vertically aligns
taxa of identical rank, (3) the ability to independently expand and collapse
parts of the list to emphasize or de-emphasize taxa of interest, and
(4) access to all TIARA Taxon Pages through "clickable" icons. The ordering
of taxa within the list can be modified with the List Order setting of the Settings function group in the Left Screen Area.
Taxon List Header Lines
- Finder name and option
- Total taxon counts for the TIARA system for
each of the major Linnean ranks
User-selectable Controls
- "Select a finder option:" combo box - Make a choice from the "Select
a finder option:" combo box to switch among the available options of
the Scientific Name Finder. Selecting an option from the combo box
automatically and immediately loads the chosen Finder option.
- [TaxonName] taxon home
page icon (
) - Click on the yellow Taxon Home Page Icon to link directly to the Home Page of the named taxon that the icon
immediately follows.
- [TaxonRank] taxon list
icon (
) - Click
on the blue Taxon List Icon to link directly to the Home Page of the taxon
named at the beginning of the classification line, and display a list of
taxa of the rank that the icon follows. Genus and species lists of large
higher taxa (e.g., some groups of arthropods) may take considerable time to
load (but are possible!). Generally, lists displaying >1000 elements should be avoided because of reduced system
performance (this limit is currently reached only for several of the largest insect
orders, and the higher taxa that include them).
- [TaxonRank] expand list
icon (
) -
Click on the blue Expand List Icon to expand a taxon's classification list
to display subordinate taxa down to and including the rank that the icon
follows. Genus and species lists of large higher taxa (e.g., some groups of
arthropods) may take considerable time to load (but are possible!).
Generally, lists displaying >1000 elements should be avoided because
of reduced system performance (this limit is currently reached only for several of the largest insect
orders, and the higher taxa that include them).
- [TaxonRank] collapse
list icon (
)
- Click on the blue Collapse List
Icon to collapse a taxon's classification list to hide all subordinate taxa below
and including the rank that the icon follows.
- "Top" text
link - Click on the Top link (located below the classification list) to jump to the top of the Main-Display Screen Area.
- Scroll Bars - Depending upon your monitor screen
size and the length of the classification list, you may see scroll bars on
the right and/or bottom of the Main-Display Area. Use the scroll bars to move
the Main-Display Area vertically and/or horizontally to better view its
contents.
