Neolema sexpunctata (Olivier)

SYNONYMY

Crioceris sexpunctata Olivier, 1808:738
Lema albini Lacordaire, 1845:492

CLASSIFICATION

Chrysomelidae
Criocerinae
Lemini

DIAGNOSIS

The constricted pronotum and general size and color will distinguish this species from Chrysomelidae from GSMNP except the closely related Neolema cordata. In N. cordata, the median black markings of the elytra coalesce to form an inverted heart-shaped spot. In N. sexpunctata these markings are often transverse and separate. Specimens of N. cordata are usually smaller and more coarsely punctate than are those of N. sexpunctata.

DISTRIBUTION

AL, AR, DC, DE, FL, GA, IL, KY, LA, MD, MO, MS, NC, NJ, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, VA, WV / [mex., c. amer.] (Riley, et al., 2003). Confirmed for GSMNP.

FOOD PLANTS

This species is associated with Commelinaceae, having been recorded from Commelina communis L., C. diffusa Burm., C. erecta L., Tradescantia virginiana L., and wandering jew [Zebrina pendula Schnizl.]. It has also been reported from plants of other families but these probably do not represent hosts (Clark, et al., in prep.).
