Advising Philosophy: I believe that every individual’s past directly influences their future. The student who sits before me as a freshman will not be the man or woman I watch walk across the stage at graduation. As humans we learn by experience, by specific instances that shape the outcomes of our lives. These experiences are directed by the people we meet along life’s journey and by achieving personal goals. The experiences at the University level will dramatically change a student’s vision and scope in life. So advising, like teaching, is a process of dissemination, listening and learning – on both sides of the desk. Advising is more than helping to navigate the complicated waters of the university experience. It is guiding students towards becoming the captains of their own vessels, rather than an empty passenger on a void and stormy sea. Advising means allowing students to explore, adapt, fail, and achieve, as they have never done before. My philosophy is that advising is an adventure saga that you just can’t put down – full of thrills and agonies – love and hate – happiness and disappointment. A journey of immeasurable development allowing those experiences that influence and shape a student to directly impact the life they will lead beyond my office and the walls of their classrooms.
