RESEARCH AND TEACHING ACTIVITIES:
- Completed study of comprehensive survey of solifuges in Kenya with a video/web/museum outreach component, with Texas A&M University, the National Museums of Kenya, Kenya Wildlife Service and the Lake Bogoria Dryland Environmnetal Education Center, including full-scale renovation of an exhibit at the National Museums of Kenya, and a video project for the 4-H Junior Master Gardener Program. Assisted in the redesign of the laboratory curricula for a course, General Entology and Evolution of Insect Structure at Texas A&M University.
- Taught two insect video courses for students, grades 6-8 for the University of California’s Valentine Eastern Sierra Reserve and the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory. Created curricula for the production, direction, videography, and editing of digital video. Completed four short children’s educational insect videos on the insects of the Reserve and Formica ruffa ants.
- Designed insect workshops for K-12 classes for the University of California Santa Barbara Reserve System. Taught in-class workshops for over 2000 students in Mono and Inyo Counties, CA. Assisted with field trips to Laboratory Field Station, facilitating outdoor curricula.
- Responsible for insect sample processing; including sorting, cleaning and filing for ongoing stream monitoring projects in Eastern Sierra Streams for the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Lab. This included identification of aquatic macro-invertebrates and data compilation.
- Led residential environmental education programs for ages 10-40 for the Mono Lake Committee in Lee Vining, CA. Guided naturalist tours, day-hikes, monitored meals, led evening activities. Developed new macro-invertebrate curriculum implementing leaf-packs and field guides. Designed insect collection “Arthropods of the Mono Basin” for educational display in Mono Lake Visitor’s Center.
- Conducted research on “Burning and Vegetation Preferences of Large Mammals and the Common Ostrich in Nairobi National Park” for the Kenya Wildlife Service.
- Responsible for administrative and technical support of aquatic biology and ecology laboratories at Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania. Tested water samples using digital water chemistry equipment. Completed project to organize and categorize university ichthyology collection in World List of Ichthyology per standards set by Nelson’s “Fishes of The World.”
- Ensured conduct of effective weekly waterfowl census in John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum. Managed the organization of 30 to 35 volunteers for annual count of White-tailed deer in Refuge. Conducted a weekly bird of prey survey with particular emphasis on endangered species (Great Horned Owl). Researched, wrote and presented family nature programs for ages 4-50. Fulfilled naturalist duties during hands-on animal encounters, flora/fauna identification, nature walks, watershed protection and outdoor safety. Monitored initial marsh machine water chemistry levels weekly for grey water recycling project. Obtained familiarity with and operated Hach testing kits for dissolved oxygen, nitrates, phosphates. Demonstrated operation and purpose of Marsh Machine with visitors.

Contributing author with Dr. Robert Wharton on six short articles for www.solpugid.com, a worldwide collaborative effort to disseminate information on arachnids of the group Solifugae; “Predators,” “Prey,” “Foraging Behavior,” “Feeding Behavior,” “Life History,” and “Courtship and Mating.”

Co-author of presentation and publication “Burning and Vegetation Preferences of the large mammals and the Common Ostrich in Nairobi National Park, Kenya.” for the Kenya Wildlife Service and members of the East African Wildlife Conservation Fund and local Maasai Elders in Nairobi, Kenya.
