Education:
B.S. (Biology), Sam Houston State University, 1953
M.S. (Entomology), Texas A&M University, 1955
Ph.D. (Entomology), Texas A&M University, 1959
Research Emphasis: Systematics and biology of weevils of the family
Curculionidae; insect collection development and management; history of entomology.
Research and Teaching Activities: After 35 years of teaching undergraduate
and graduate courses in systematic entomology activities now involve research
on the systematics and biology of Curculionidae, curation of the departmental
insect collection, and bibliographical and historical study of entomology.
Most of the weevil study has been conducted on the tribe Anthonomini, a large
group of primarily tropical species including pest species such as the boll
weevil and the pepper weevil. In addition to the traditional study of adult
characters, research on this group has involved investigation of immature stages,
comparative biologies, and host relationships in a holistic approach to the
systematics of the group. Approximately 110 research papers, reviews and book
chapters have been published, most of which deal with the systematics of weevils.
