Dr. Max Summers

Congratulations to Dr. Max Summers on receiving the 2007 Vice Chancellor's Award in Excellence for the Research category.

Dr. Summers and his former student Gale Smith conducted pioneering research to develop the baculovirus expression vector sy"Stem---or BEVS-now used worldwide in agricultural and medical research, induding the development of vaccines for preventing cervical cancer in young womel'l.. BEVS was also used to produce a soon-to-be marketed new treatment for prostate cancer.

One colleague said Dr. Summers's recent research on sorting membrane proteins is "his most creative and original work," extending his significant research contributions into the world of cell biology.
