The Department of Entomology is proud to announce Dr. Robert Coulson is joining the ranks of ESA Fellow this year at the annual meeting.
Dr. Coulson joins several other faculty members, including Drs. Perry Adkisson, Fowden Maxwell, George Teetes, John Thomas, and Brad Vinson, representing the Department and the Southwestern Branch.
Dr. Coulson joined the Texas Forest Service in 1970 as a principal entomologist. He also served as assistant professor for the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station in the same year. Three years later, Coulson received an academic appointment with the Department.
His research has been cross-disciplinary, investigating activities and impacts of insects and other taxa in forest, prairie, savanna and agricultural landscapes.
In 1984, Dr. Coulson co-founded the KEL, or Knowlege Engineering Laboratory, to facilitate research and development of applications for planning, problem solving and decision support in environmental science and management settings. The focus of the research has been directed towards landscape-scale problems that require integration, interpretation and use of different representations of knowledge.
Some of his projects that involve entomology include: integrated pest management of the southern pine beetle, landscape ecology of feral Africanized honey bees and risk-rating post-oak savanna landscapes for fire ants.
Dr. Coulson teaches undergraduate courses in insect ecology (ENTO 424), forest protection (FRSC 307), and one graduate course in landscape ecology (ENTO 625).
The designation of ESA Fellow recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to entomology. Fellows receive gratis registration to the current year's ESA meeting and are presented with an inscribed plaque honoring their fellowship.
