Record Number of Entomology Graduates Participate in May Commencement Ceremony

by Rob Williams

May 21, 2009

A milestone was made in the Department of Entomology's 110-year history as a record number of students from the Department paricipated in May 2009 commencement exercises.

A total of 26 students, consisting of 24 undergraduates and two graduate students joined the more than 800 undergraduates and 57 graduate students from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences during the 2 p.m. ceremony on Friday, May 15.

Students and families were invited to a special Thursday evening convocation with featured speaker former astronaut and retired Marine Corps Brigadier General Charles F. Bolden, Jr. (Ret. USMC). Memories and goodbyes were shared with faculty and staff over sandwiches, cake and punch at the Department's traditional graduation luncheon the following Friday afternoon.

"This is a special time for us," Department Head Dr. Kevin Heinz said. "Congratulations on the behalf of our department. This is your day and we celebrate your accomplishments."

Senior Michelle Wood said she will treasure the memories she has made and will miss her friends the most, including Patricia Mullins.

"It is a happy day for Patricia and I know she is going to succeed in life," Wood said.

"We are very proud of Patricia," said her father, Jim Moore.

Heinz recognized the students for their hard work and commended the parents, faculty and staff in making the record number of students graduating come true.
