Frequently Asked Questions

Topic:
Famous entomologist
Question:
My son is 7 years old and in the second grade. Everyone in his class is required to research a famous American and give a report on them.

He wants to be an entomologist when he grows up, so, he wants to research a famous American "bug scientist." I have been surfing the Web for information and found your site.

Can you share the name of a famous American entomologist? He is required to give basics such as birth date and place, death date and place if deceased, something they did as a child, young adult, and his/her claim to fame. He also is required to share 4 - 6 interesting facts about them. Can you help?

Answer:
If you are looking for historical figures I might suggest: Charles Valentine Riley, T. D. E. Cockerell, Thomas Say, or John LeConte. Of course, there are many others. One of the best books on entomologists is titled American Entomologists by Arnold Mallis.

We also have a history section on our Web site at http://entocentennial.tamu.edu. Some of the more famous Texas entomologists are mentioned there.

Here at Texas A&M University, we have many noted entomologists. There are faculty resumes on our Web site (http://insects.tamu.edu) that would be a start for local entomologists.

Thanks for writing us. We're always happy to hear about a young person's interest in entomology.
