Boats
Question:
I am trying to find some information regarding pest control in a boat marina environment. I have a very difficult time with spiders and other miscellaneous bugs around the area. I have piles of eaten bugs all over the inside of my boat, with the associated spider webs. It makes it almost impossible to use the boat. I am trying to find a method (chemical or natural) to control these spiders and other insects, yet one that is safe for the aquatic environment.
Answer:
Unfortunately, you're in a difficult situation with no simple cure. Insecticides have very limited use in this situation and are a concern around waterways. However, you should be able to reduce the problem with some changes in the habitat. The spiders are there because there is food for them. The food is insects that show up because they are undoubtedly attracted to lights around your boat and the marina. Here are some suggestions. 1. Reduce the lighting - especially from dusk until midnight which is the activity time for night active insects. 2. Change the lighting to yellow lights rather than blue or white. 3. Move the lights away from the boat area. 4. Sweep down the spider webs often to discourage spider buildup. 5. Cover the boat when not in use to reduce the problem.
