Frequently Asked Questions

Topic:
Caterpillars, asps
Question:
Yesterday I brushed up against what appeared to be a some sort of cocoon attached to a tree branch. It was grayish, furry and approximately an inch long. It stung me and was very painful. Do you have any idea what this was? Today the pain and numbness have subsided a little, but I am left with a red "raspberry" mark about 1/2" in diameter. I would like to know what this insect did to me.
Answer:
What stung you was undoubtedly a "puss" caterpillar which are called "asps" in Texas. Their stings can be quite painful but usually go away in a few hours. Some people have very severe reactions and should seek medical attention.
