Frequently Asked Questions

Topic:
Chiggers
Question:
What is your suggested treatment for chiggers? Product to use, frequency of application, etc? We have approximately 2 acres fenced and would like a way to kill the existing chiggers and keep the others out.
Answer:
In general, we recommend that you use repellents on your clothes to prevent chiggers. Repellents that have scientific evidence of effectiveness all contain DEET as the active ingredient. The concentration is not as important as getting thorough coverage. For severe situations, you might consider a treatment of the yard with permethrin or carbaryl (Sevin). Once every few months during the spring and summer should work fine. Follow directions on the label for dose and application method. You must use the liquid formulations rather than the granules (which only work in the soil).
